World Post Day 2026: One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities
One postal network, infinite possibilities'.
Every year on October 9, the world observes World Post Day — a day dedicated to the postal services that still connect people, businesses and communities across the globe.
The Story Behind the Date
October 9 marks the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), founded on this day in 1874 with the Treaty of Bern in Switzerland. The UPU created a single global postal territory, making it possible to send a letter to any country in the world. The 1969 UPU Congress in Tokyo decided to commemorate October 9 every year, and the 1984 Congress in Hamburg gave the observance its present name, World Post Day. Today the UPU functions as a United Nations specialised agency, headquartered in Berne, Switzerland.
Theme for 2026
The official theme for World Post Day 2026 is "World Post Day: One postal network, infinite possibilities". The campaign celebrates a united, trusted and reliable global postal network and the many possibilities it creates — the post today delivers far more than letters and parcels, extending into financial, digital and social services that touch everyday life.
Why the Post Still Matters
The purpose of the day is to build awareness of the post's role in daily life and its contribution to social and economic development. Member countries organise their own celebrations — from open days at post offices and postal museums to new postal products and services — keeping alive a network that remains one of the world's enduring examples of international cooperation.
